Quotes vs. Estimates?

A quote is required for any large scale renovation or new build.  Whether you're gutting a kitchen, adding a two-story addition, or digging down your basement - in order to get an accurate idea of the cost you need a full quote.

Our quotes are hyper detailed and very well thought out because in the process of creating a quote we're building a theoretical fully realized structure.  We calculate the quantity and value of all required construction components from square footage of brick siding to the expected quantity of light switches.

An estimate is an educated guess. Estimates are typically used for a smaller scale project.  Say you'd like a new kitchen island and some pot lights.  We will use our expertise, and past experience, to provide you with a best guess at the projected cost.

Which one do I need?

It really depends on the scale of your project.  If your plans are confined to one room or a few simple changes we would recommend an estimate.  Any plan that is larger than one room needs a full quote in order to be accurate.  Our estimates are ballpark and based on over 20 years experience.  Our quotes however, and by necessity, are detailed and contain up-to-the-minute pricing.

Is there a cost?

We believe providing estimates should be free as they are only moderately time consuming and relatively straightforward.  Quotes however, are labour-intensive and a carefully considered plan for a successful renovation; as such we do charge for quotes.

What's involved in getting a quote or estimate?

The steps are the same whether you're seeking a quote or an estimate. The variables are timings and cost.

A 30-45 minute in person or zoom call to review intended project scope

Estimate:

A 20 minute phone call to review intended project scope

Estimate:

Another phone call to review estimate cost and answer any questions regarding scope of work

Estimate:

A site visit for an estimate is typically not necessary, however we do ask clients to provide any relevant reference materials (i.e. photos, plans, etc)

Design (Optional)

Quote:

We do offer our in-design expertise during the quoting process.  In fact we encourage clients to opt for this service because it's never too early to start thinking about design

Estimate:

Often floor plans or renderings are not required for small jobs however our design services are always available - rates the same as above

Chris & Ellen

Chris & Ellen
Barrett is the kind of contractor that "gets it." He knows the stresses of remodeling and renovating, treats me honestly and understands how my budget works. I know I can turn to him when I'm lost or in trouble.  My most reassuring memory in listing my complex problems and hearing Barrett say, "We can work with that!"
